There’s no true halfway point between the U.S. and Australia, unless you count the middle of the Pacific Ocean, which, while scenic, lacks things like chairs or land. Fortunately, Hawai‘i exists, and nestled within its island chain lies Kaua‘i: lush, untamed, and quite possibly the most photogenic third wheel a wedding could ever ask for.

When my wife and I decided to get married back in 2007, we looked for a place that made sense geographically (as much as that’s possible when the Pacific Ocean is involved). With my roots in the U.S., her family ties spanning both sides of the ocean, and our home base now in Australia, Kaua‘i felt less like a compromise and more like a revelation. Specifically, the south shore, Poʻipū, and the Grand Hyatt, which became our wedding destination.
A Wedding Destination That Brings the Wow
Kaua‘i isn’t just a location; it’s an atmosphere. It’s the Jurassic Park of islands. Literally, parts of the movie were filmed there, but with better catering and significantly fewer raptors. From cliffs plunging into turquoise waters, to waterfalls that seem to pour never end, Kaua‘i delivers ammmmmbiance, romance, and the kind of natural scenic beauty that makes every photo look like a National Geographic cover.
And speaking of photos, this island doesn’t take a bad one. Whether you’re saying your vows beneath a swaying palm tree, with the ocean lapping just behind you, or sneaking away to take portraits framed by the Nā Pali Coast’s ridges, Kaua‘i practically begs to be captured. If you’re into photography, this is your playground. Golden hours last longer here, and every turn reveals another “how-is-this-real” moment.
Who Should Consider a Kaua‘i wedding?

So, let’s break it down. Kaua‘i is perfect for:
-
Adventure lovers. Want to hike the Kalalau Trail before the rehearsal dinner? Done. Helicopter ride over a waterfall? Tuesday’s looking good.
-
Nature lovers. You’ll be surrounded by it. Literally. Sometimes it’ll sneak into your ceremony in the form of a gentle tropical breeze—or an overly curious chicken.
-
Photographers and romantics. If misty mountains (but not those snowy kind), dramatic coastlines, and rainbows on command do something for you, this island is your muse.
-
Couples who love the idea of family reunion meets island holiday. It turns out, picking a dream destination makes it really easy for people to RSVP “yes.”
A Wedding with a Wild Side
While Maui and O‘ahu often grab the spotlight, Kaua‘i holds its own with quiet confidence. In fact, I dare say it easily surpasses the latter. It’s wilder, greener, and less commercial – ideal for couples wanting a more intimate and authentic Hawaiian vibe. The south shore in particular strikes that Goldilocks balance: warm, sunny, easy to navigate, and bursting with postcard-worthy backdrops.

The Grand Hyatt in Poʻipū isn’t just a venue. It’s a tropical kingdom. Sprawling grounds, sweeping ocean views, koi ponds, waterfalls, and enough coconut trees to make a pirate weep with joy. Your guests won’t just be attending your wedding; they’ll be having a full-blown holiday.

We went to Kaua‘i to get married. What we didn’t plan for was how much our guests would fall in love with it too. The island gave us more than a wedding. It gave us an opportunity to reconnect, slow down, and focus on what is important to celebrate in life. Family and friends.
If you’re looking for a destination that’s equal parts wild and warm, photogenic and personal, romantic and relaxed, Kaua‘i might just be your destination too.
Pro tip: always leave room on the guest list. When you choose paradise, people will show up.
